Questacon: Elevate your teaching with free STEM workshops

Are you on target to deliver the best possible STEM learning for your students this year? Engineering is Elementary can equip you with confidence, capacity and skills in STEM plus get you units of work and resources to implement in your classroom right away. Our programs embed STEM culture, model best practice and empower educators across Australia.

Engineering is Elementary provides free, hands-on professional development for educators, offering practical, enjoyable ways to integrate STEM into cross-curricular lessons. Educators build confidence and capacity in their own knowledge, skills and dispositions relating to STEM and STEM teaching, enabling increased STEM learning opportunities for their students. We work with educators to build their awareness of engineering skills and careers, providing exposure to engineering problem solving and practicing engineers.

In a collaborative learning environment, you’ll gain:

  • Practical experience: Engage directly with activities from our integrated STEM units, bringing real-world applications into your teaching.

  • Enhanced teaching strategies: Learn how to deepen student knowledge of STEM content and tailor strategies to meet diverse learning needs.

  • Confidence in STEM: Master the engineering design process to seamlessly integrate STEM into your lessons.

And you’ll have the skills to immediately implement it with a resource kit of goodies and a unit of work with the flexibility and curriculum connections to suit your classroom context.

Designing parachutes for integrated STEM activities your students will love

In Term 1 educators from across the country joined us online to build their engineering awareness and share their learnings as they explored hands-on activities and teaching strategies. Our virtual workshop series: ‘A Long Way Down: Designing Parachutes’, explored the field of aeronautical engineering. Alongside the activities and exploration of the Engineering Design Process, participants heard from Flight Lieutenant Jessie Cowen, an engineer from the Royal Australian Air Force. Jessie was a fantastic role model who shared her path into engineering and the skills and dispositions essential to her role.

Every activity encourages problem-solving, imagination, and discovery – engaging young minds to develop confidence and a love of exploration. Come tinker, test, and let your ideas take flight!

“The multitude of hands-on activities that were engaging, fun and cheap to run! These can be taken back and used in our own classrooms” – Participant

“Sometimes it can be challenging to develop engaging ideas to help the primary students from year 3-6 to invent and use the design process. I am definitely using this over the next few weeks with year 3 and 4. You have also helped with planning and sourcing resources” – Participant

When are we coming to town?

In Term 2 there are in-person workshops in WA and NSW, as well as our national virtual workshops. We are always looking to hear from educators who are interested in attending or hosting workshops into their community.
