Sun-safety in school

At We Are Feel Good Inc. we aim to work with forward thinking schools to raise awareness for sun-safe practices and protect the next generation from the harsh Aussie sun.

Why?

Sun exposure can add up during a typical school day with physical education, recess, lunch and after-school activities predominantly held outdoors. Young skin is more sensitive to UV radiation, making them more susceptible to sunburn and long-term damage. Our goal is to change the mindset of our kids and show them that wearing sunscreen is not only a necessity, but it feels good to wear.

Did you know?

High sun exposure in the first 10 years of life more than doubles a child’s risk of developing skin cancer later in in life.

5 Reasons to teach kids young

  • Instilling sun safe habits at a young age can set the foundation for lifelong practices.

  • Prevention is better than treatment.

  • Learning sun-safety in school has a powerful effect on teaching the next generation as a whole.

  • Sun-safe practices complement overall health and wellness, including physical activity and nutrition.

  • Empowers our children to take responsibility for their health.

By understanding the risks and learning how to mitigate them, children can make informed decisions before they go outside.

What you can do

On top of encouraging parents to apply an SPF50+ sunscreen in the morning before school, we need to educate the kids on the importance of reapplying throughout the day. Remind them not to miss the areas we can often forget; lips, ears, hands, back of the neck, top of feet and the scalp.

Teachers and parents play an important role in not only educating kids in sun-safety, but also by being a sun smart advocate. Lead by example and show them that you take protecting yourself from the harsh rays of the sun seriously!

*Use sunscreen liberally and reapply according to product directions. Avoid prolonged exposure.. Sunscreen is only one component of sun protection, it is important to wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, hats and protective eyewear when exposed to the sun.
