Nestled among the towering trees of Lorne’s hinterland in the heart of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road Region, Live Wire Park is the first completely off-grid adventure park in Australia.
The park offers a series of high ropes course challenges for all ages and Australia’s most extreme zip line rollercoaster.
While the park is known for its physical challenges, they also offer school programs suited to educational groups of all ages and abilities. The programs incorporate elements of sustainability, the rainforest ecosystem, and personal growth.
Sustainability
Live Wire Park is Australia’s first outdoor adventure park that is completely powered by nature. Educators take student groups through core sustainability principles and how the park implemented to ensure they had a minimal impact on the environment.
They discuss their photovoltaic off-grid system and how by harnessing solar energy, they’ve managed to use a 5.4 kW Solar Array which charges a battery bank, which in turn powers the entire park.
Beyond solar, they explain their water cycle management plan and the systems in place to capture water on-site, negating the need for mains water. The park also treats waste onsite through self-composting toilets and recycling grey water.
The local ecosystem
Students will discover the temperate rainforest environment and its dense biodiversity. There are several species of trees and plants with some towering Blue Gum Eucalypts over 150 years old.
The crew will discuss the native wildlife that makes it’s home in the adventure park and while it can’t be guaranteed, there’s a chance you’ll be visited by koalas, wombats and kookaburras.
Personal development
While it may look like the students are just scaling trees, swinging on ropes and plunging down a bungee jump, there’s a lot more going on during the high ropes courses.
In safe outdoor spaces like Live Wire Park, children can find some freedom away from direct adult supervision, learning how to take turns, to pick themselves up when they fall and to become independent and self-reliant.
Encouraging children to try activities they might be a little afraid of helps them to become more confident and self-assured. They also get rid of built up energy, enabling them to become calmer and more focused in the classroom.
The activities are the ultimate group bonding experience, bringing students into a whole new setting, away from a sometimes stressful and familiar environment.
At Live Wire Park children naturally come out of their shells and become more social, playing together, encouraging one another, talking to different children and making new friends.
Tailored programs
While all of Live Wire Park’s School Programs include elements mentioned above they’re also happy to tailor something specific to your school’s needs. Catering options are available and there is local accommodation for longer trips.
