A thorough investigation into the Hume regions play space offering, made all the difference for Redstone Park

There is a lot involved in delivering an amazing park in Melbourne today, what with meeting design and construction codes, understanding individual council requirements, high client expectations – and all the while sticking to budget.  However, dancing in the detail is what Fleming’s do best, and the outcome for Redstone Park in Sunbury, is proof in the pudding!

To achieve the client brief – which was to deliver an impressive park that feels friendly, accessible, full of great play equipment and speaks to all demographics; Fleming’s design team, Flow Design Studio, invested heavily in the pre-planning phase.

A thorough investigation into the entire municipalities play space offering provided excellent insight to what the region needed, the unique point of difference the Redstone Park had, and how Fleming’s horticultural background could benefit the project most.

Armed with this intelligence, Flow were able to conceive a design with a difference, focusing on all segments of the population. For young children to young adults there would be plenty of play space to attract and maintain interest. The focus for young couples was space to relax and unwind away from the hubbub of the play space. And for families, the shelter areas and BBQ area would provide excellent line of sight and for active retirees – plenty of space to meet with friends, walk a dog, or just chill out with a good read.

Positioned within the heart of the Redstone development – a residential project by award winning developer, Villawood Properties, the site offers a sloping topography which softens and provides a gentle and more natural feeling to the park.

The team from Flow Design Studio harnessed this sloping value to its full advantage, placing the shelter and BBQ/picnic area at a high point showing off a lovely vista across the park. The position also offers excellent line of sight so parents can be busy with a BBQ while keeping an eye on the kids.

The play-space or within the park is exceptionally well designed with three zones dedicated to kids. The teens will be impressed by their own zone complete with half-basketball court, skate elements and a chill out seating area.  Kids aged 5-11 will enjoy cool play equipment such as the multi-purpose tower with slides and nets, swings, all-access carousel, natural climb and play pieces and more. And the tiny tots will love all the rocking, swings, musical play elements, and little fortress play ideal for their growing bodies and minds.

All people are catered for here with a contemplation zone with two relaxation nooks designed to enjoy the view across the open space area.  The circular nooks provide an inviting space to read a book, watch the kids kick about or meet friends for lunch.

But of course, a park needs shade, and shade comes from trees, and trees, is what Fleming’s do best of all.  Leaning on our tree experts, is just one point of difference for Fleming’s, and when it comes to tree selection, we know we have made the most exceptional choices.  The stunning pallet of mature trees that will grow quickly to become a stately feature of the park. Offering a beautiful canopy of natural shade for visitors, Redstone Park will be a visual feast with large avenues of ornamental, deciduous and native trees.

The entrance itself is a feature with a large, paved apron with seating acting as a passive recreation area which opens to a fleet of steps and a journey through an arbour of wisteria plants, which then opens to the large multi-purpose, open space kick-about area.

The park features Villawood’s signature corten-steel sculptures with birds in flight – seeming ready to sweep across the park or down through the display village.

All of this comes together in a harmony of landscape design that is sure to set this park apart from any of its counterparts in the Hume municipality and become a local park residents will be proud to call their own.
