11,700 hours. That’s roughly how long a student spends in a classroom from kindergarten to Year 12. And most of the time, these students are sitting on chairs that don’t fit.

For a student who doesn’t have the postural strength to sit still, staying seated this long can be the hardest step they take. And then they dysregulate. The screaming, the refusal, the walking out, the wandering. To an untrained eye it looks like bad behaviour. But this is a child who has simply run out of room to cope in a set up that does not understand their needs.

Don’t get me wrong, This isn’t about one chair fixing everything. But a chair that’s the wrong height, the wrong depth, with no support is basically asking a growing body do something it physically can’t sustain. And we wonder why the student don’t sit still. As a paediatric physio, I’ve sat in on enough classroom observations to know this is a real issue for every school. Most classrooms were built around one average-sized child who doesn’t exist.
