PLD: Starting PLD’s SSP Programs? Five steps to get ready
Starting PLD’s Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programs is just the beginning. A successful start depends on having the right programs, professional learning and student assessment information in place.
Whether you’re planning to launch at the beginning of the school year or getting started during the term, these five steps can help your school prepare for implementation and get the most from PLD’s SSP programs.

1. Select Your Classroom Programs
Start by selecting the PLD classroom programs that best meet the needs of your school.
For most schools, we recommend our Integrated SSP Kits. These provide a comprehensive classroom solution, combining Daily Reviews with print and digital resources and relevant catch-up programs.
If you’re unsure which programs are right for your school, explore our program comparison table or submit an online quote request. Once your quote is prepared, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your requirements with Diana Rigg, PLD’s Founder, and make any adjustments before proceeding.
2. Get Your Team Trained
Professional learning is an important part of implementing PLD’s SSP Programs with confidence.
Schools can choose from online professional learning or presenter-led training. Online courses consist of four to six recorded videos and take approximately 3–3.5 hours to complete. They can be completed individually or as a staff group, with coaching available afterwards to address questions and refine understanding.
Presenter-led training provides your team with the opportunity to learn together, ask questions and discuss SSP implementation with a PLD presenter.

3. Decide When to Launch PLD
PLD can be introduced at any time during the school year. Where possible, we recommend launching on a pupil-free day, either at the beginning or end of the school year.
This provides dedicated time for staff to become familiar with the programs, prepare for implementation and process student placement information.
We also have launch guides to support schools starting in Terms 1, 2, 3 or 4.
4. Prepare Your School for Training
Before training, there are three key things to have in place:
- Make your PLD programs accessible so teachers can connect their learning directly to the resources they’ll use.
- Set up your PLD Tracking Sheets, including relevant classes and student information.
- Complete the recommended student screening to help identify appropriate starting points for students.
Student samples should be collected before training but do not need to be marked. Marking and transferring results to the tracking sheets are completed as part of the training day.

5. Schedule Follow-Up Support
Once you’ve started implementing PLD’s SSP programs, your school can schedule a complimentary coaching session with the PLD team.
Use this opportunity to work through remaining questions, discuss your implementation experience and ensure your team feels confident moving forward.
