Head lice myths: Fact or fiction
Head lice infestations are a common concern, particularly among children and their families. However, there are many misconceptions about how lice spread, how to treat and what having lice really means. Let’s bust some common head lice myths!
“Lice can jump or fly”: Fiction! The truth is that lice cannot jump or fly – they can only crawl. They are however quite fast movers, covering up to 23 cm per minute under natural conditions. The most common way lice spread is through direct head-to-head contact, but they can also be transferred by sharing items like hairbrushes, headbands, hats, and even pillowcases or chair backs in cases of heavy infestation.
“Head lice only like dirty or fine hair”: Fiction! Headlice like warm scalps and hair of all types – they do not discriminate. Regardless of hygiene, hair habits or gender, headlice will find a home! Headlice are most common amongst younger school age children (4-11 years old) likely due to how close they are in contact with each other.
“The whole family needs to be treated together”: No. While the whole family can catch headlice from each other, only infested family members need to be treated. It is important to regularly check* the whole family using the following technique.
* To check for head lice apply conditioner, dry and brush the hair without rinsing the conditioner. The conditioner stuns head lice for about 20 minutes. Use a fine-toothed comb and comb through in small sections, wiping it on a tissue regularly so you can check for lice and their eggs.
You need to treat headlice more than once: Sometimes. While many treatment methods require a second treatment, Licener® Complete Solution only requires one single treatment to kill both lice and their eggs.
