Spectrum Tuition: One classroom. Five ability levels. How do you reach them all?

What if the differentiation was already built into the resource?

She’s in Year 5. She flies through fractions, finishing early, looking for more. But put geometry in front of her and she’s stuck on a prerequisite from two years ago. Same child. Same classroom. Two completely different ability levels.

Now multiply that by 25 students, across every topic, every week. The Grattan Institute puts a number on it: Students in the same year level can span between five and eight ability levels. It doesn’t get easier as they get older. The gap widens.

This is the part that most differentiation resources miss. They assume ability is fixed. One label per student. Below, at, above. Any teacher who’s watched a confident maths student freeze during a writing task knows it’s never that simple. Ability shifts topic by topic. If the resource doesn’t account for that, the teacher has to, at 10 pm on a Sunday night, rewriting worksheets one more time.

Nobody gets skipped. Nobody gets left behind. The same student might fly through Air in measurement on Monday and need to spend longer in Water for algebra on Wednesday. The structure allows for that because it’s built into every topic, not stamped on the student.

Students outside these bands are candidates for intervention
