Jungle Play: Two new playspaces transform Claremont Special School

Urban Play and Jungle Play

A collaboration between Jungle Play and Urban Play has delivered two fantastic new playspaces at the Claremont Special School, a Department of Education P-12 special school, located at Silkstone, west of Brisbane.  Both new playspaces actively demonstrate the school’s commitment to creating diverse and stimulating learning and play experiences that facilitate creativity and personal growth for children of all abilities.

Featuring both traditional active play equipment elements by Urban Play and a colourful selection of play sculptures by Jungle Play principal artist, Alan Groves, and a talented production team. Students can climb, spin and swing or ride a giant bee, frog or ladybird, buzz in and around a giant yellow beehive or relax and reflect in the cosy, quiet, and shady space inside a Gum Leaf Pod.

Urban Play and Jungle Play

Two play areas completed at the Claremont Special school in 2025 featured many Jungle Play sculptures and were so well received by the students that when it came to creating two new play areas, the School wanted to continue with the Jungle Play theme – but with a difference. Urban Play designers, Tobias and Kate, were engaged to visualise the spaces and maximise the fun. Their objective was to create a seamless play experience utilising both Jungle Play sculptures and Urban Play’s range of active play equipment including a challenging climbing unit, swings, and spinners. The results are exceptional and provide students with two playspaces offering opportunities for all kinds of play and, of course, endless learning and fun.

The designers faced many challenges including varying levels, numerous fences, trees and underground service access points meaning there was much to be taken into consideration from a design perspective. With creative thought, logistical problem solving and a solution providing access via a neighbouring property, Urban Play’s hard-working design and construction team was able to complete two new and spectacular play spaces in record time for the commencement of the 2026 school year.

According to the staff at Claremont Special School, there were way more smiles than tears round for the first day of school. Job well done team!
